Hello and welcome to Bedtime Stories for Kids!

I’m Liesha Northover, a professional writer and editor who also happens to love picture books.

In fact, I’ve always loved them and have built up a little collection over the years. I guess I’m a grown-up who never really grew up! Bestselling books from my childhood that I still treasure are The Cat in the Hat and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back. And, of course, Winnie the Pooh.

Why picture books? Because they are like self-contained works of art and literature all wrapped up in a package we can enjoy anywhere, anytime.

Kids’ books are important. The stories they contain play a vital role in the growth and development of girls and boys. Reading helps children learn to express and cope with their feelings, and to build their confidence with reading, language and learning. The books they read and the characters they get to know can become lifelong friends.

Many people think of picture books as reading tools for younger children, but picture book reading is an important educational tool at any age. In fact, picture books have been found to be highly effective in helping secondary school students with their study of a wide range of subjects, including languages. Picture books are especially helpful for reluctant readers.

Reading at bedtime helps to nurture bonds between children and their parents, guardians, grandparents and other carers. I think the bedtime story creates a special time and place when all the world is quiet and we can focus on each other and the magic of the story world.

As a child my dream was to write and illustrate kids’ books. After leaving school I completed a degree in visual art and a diploma in professional writing and editing, and have been fortunate to be able to devote some of my professional life to making that childhood dream come true.

My first kids’ story, ‘Fairy Bread’, was published in a book called Even More Poems to Make you Puke (Blue Bat Books) in 2001, and I continue to write fun kids’ stories.

My favourite book at the moment is Rodney Loses It!  by Michael Gerard Bauer. My sister gave it to me for my birthday recently. I laugh every time I read this book.
